As flu season approaches, health experts emphasize the importance of vaccinations for older adults. According to Dr. Chris Vercammen, a general internist and medical director at Remo Health, maintaining an updated vaccination schedule is crucial to preventing serious illnesses in this age group. Here are six vital vaccines recommended for individuals aged 60 and older, as outlined by Dr. Vercammen and Dr. Grant Fowler, chair of family medicine at the Burnett School of Medicine at Texas Christian University.
1. Flu Vaccine
The flu vaccine is often regarded as the “No. 1 most important vaccine” for everyone aged six months and older, particularly for those over 50. Dr. Fowler highlights the urgency of this vaccination, especially following a year in which vaccination rates declined significantly. He notes that approximately 27,000 people died from flu-related complications last year, with the majority of fatalities occurring in individuals aged 65 and older.
Dr. Vercammen underscores that older adults are at a higher risk for severe complications from the flu. He recommends receiving the flu vaccine annually, ideally before the end of October, and advises patients over 65 to opt for either a high-dose or adjuvanted flu vaccine to enhance immune response.
2. COVID-19 Vaccine
Despite a decrease in severe COVID-19 cases, the virus remains a concern, particularly for older adults. Dr. Vercammen stresses the importance of staying up to date with the latest COVID-19 vaccinations to guard against severe symptoms and potential long-term complications. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that individuals over 65 receive two doses of the updated COVID-19 vaccine, spaced six months apart, especially if they have additional risk factors.
3. TDAP Vaccine
The TDAP vaccine protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis. Dr. Fowler explains that individuals only need to receive this vaccine or its booster every ten years. Notably, recent increases in pertussis cases highlight the importance of this vaccine, which protects both older adults and vulnerable young children.
4. RSV Vaccine
The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine is a newer addition to the recommended vaccinations for older adults. Dr. Fowler indicates that it is advised for individuals over 75 or those over 50 with certain risk factors, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, or cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Vercammen notes that RSV can lead to severe respiratory illness, particularly in older adults with underlying conditions. He suggests that individuals starting at age 60 consult their healthcare provider regarding the appropriate timing for this vaccine.
5. Pneumococcal Vaccines
The pneumococcal vaccine is another critical immunization for those aged 65 and older. Dr. Vercammen emphasizes that these vaccines protect against serious illnesses caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae, including pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections.
6. Shingles Vaccine
The shingles vaccine, known as Shingrix, is recommended for individuals over 50. Dr. Vercammen points out that shingles can cause severe pain and complications, and Shingrix is highly effective in preventing the virus. The vaccine is administered as a two-dose series, and those who have already received both doses do not need further vaccinations.
In addition to vaccinations, older adults should adhere to general health practices to enhance their well-being. These include regular handwashing, avoiding crowded places during flu season, and engaging in annual wellness screenings with primary care providers. Maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and getting sufficient sleep are further recommendations to promote overall health and potentially reduce the risk of falls and other health complications.
Staying informed and proactive about vaccinations and health practices can significantly impact the health outcomes of older adults. By prioritizing these essential vaccinations, individuals can better protect themselves against serious illnesses during this critical period.
