U.S. Congressman Neal Dunn of Florida is reportedly facing serious health challenges, with U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson informing GOP donors that Dunn may have a “terminal diagnosis.” This information was shared during a political briefing at a Republican retreat in Key Biscayne, Florida, according to a text alert from Punchbowl News, which cited multiple attendees.
During the briefing, Johnson urged participants to pray for Dunn, who has represented Florida’s 2nd Congressional District for a decade. Following the news, Evan Power, chair of the Republican Party of Florida, expressed support for Dunn in a statement, describing him as a “true patriot” and a “fighter” in the face of adversity. “Praying for Congressman Neal Dunn and his family at this difficult time as he faces health challenges,” Power stated.
Dunn, aged 73, previously announced he would not seek reelection this year, yet he has denied speculation about stepping down early. The congressman currently holds a crucial position within a Republican majority that consists of a slim margin of 218 members in the U.S. House. Power is among the candidates considering a run for Dunn’s seat.
Speculation about Dunn’s health has intensified since early February, with reports indicating that he might resign before the end of his term. However, Dunn’s spokesperson, Eleanor Allison, reaffirmed on February 11 that he intends to complete his term in Congress, aiming to represent his constituents until the end.
Dunn has been a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump and has voted in favor of significant legislation, including Trump’s tax and spending bill known as the One Big Beautiful Bill. His voting record also includes efforts to defund National Public Radio, PBS, and the U.S. Agency for International Development.
As the political landscape evolves, nine candidates have already filed to run for Dunn’s seat, including six Republicans and three Democrats. Furthermore, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has called a special legislative session in April, which may lead to redistricting within the state, potentially impacting the congressional landscape.
Currently, the Cook Political Report rates Dunn’s district as leaning Republican by eight points, indicating its competitive nature in the upcoming elections.
