Cedars-Sinai has been awarded the highest score on the “Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion” list by the 2025 Disability Index. This recognition marks the second time the renowned medical center in Los Angeles has been acknowledged for its commitment to fostering an accessible and inclusive workplace for employees of all abilities.
The Disability Index, a collaborative initiative between the American Association of People with Disabilities and Disability:IN, evaluates organizations based on their disability inclusion policies and practices. Cedars-Sinai’s achievement highlights its efforts to create an environment where all staff members can thrive, regardless of their abilities.
Commitment to Inclusion
“Disability inclusion is a vital part of our strategy to drive innovation and create a workplace where everyone can thrive,” stated Nicole Mitchell, Chief Diversity, Inclusion and Wellbeing Officer at Cedars-Sinai. She emphasized that the recognition reflects the organization’s ongoing dedication to ensuring that individuals with both apparent and non-apparent disabilities feel valued and empowered to contribute their best.
The Disability Index employs a comprehensive benchmarking tool used by hundreds of companies worldwide. It assesses progress across six key categories: culture and leadership, enterprise-wide access, employment practices, community engagement, supplier inclusion, and responsible procurement. This framework allows organizations to identify areas for improvement and implement effective strategies for inclusion.
Employee-Driven Initiatives
Cedars-Sinai actively enhances its disability inclusion efforts through employee-driven initiatives, notably the Supporting Purposeful Accessibility, Community, and Equity (SPACE) employee resource group. This group serves as a supportive community for employees with disabilities and their allies, promoting dialogue, advocacy, and awareness.
In celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, the SPACE group organized an interactive workshop focused on setting healthy boundaries to support well-being, productivity, and respect in the workplace. These initiatives not only foster a culture of inclusion but also empower employees to share their experiences and insights.
Additionally, Cedars-Sinai is committed to celebrating the contributions of employees with disabilities. The organization is promoting opportunities for staff to engage in events—both in-person and virtual—that aim to educate about fostering inclusive workplaces.
This recognition and the initiatives undertaken by Cedars-Sinai reflect a broader commitment to ensuring that all employees have the resources and support they need to succeed. The organization’s proactive approach serves as a model for other institutions aiming to enhance their inclusivity efforts.
