Applications Open for $50 Billion Fund to Revitalize Rural Hospitals

The application process for the newly established $50 billion Rural Health Transformation Fund will commence in early September. This initiative, announced by Dr. Mehmet Oz, Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), is designed to enhance and modernize rural hospitals across the United States. The funding comes as a part of the broader “One Big Beautiful Bill” aimed at addressing the challenges posed by anticipated cuts to Medicaid.

In a statement to CBS News, Dr. Oz emphasized the fund’s objectives, noting, “This money is designed to help with workforce development, right-sizing the system, and using technology to provide things like telehealth that can change the world.” The initiative aims to bolster state-led efforts to strengthen health care delivery in rural areas over the next five years.

To qualify for funding, states must submit their Rural Health Transformation Plans to CMS by December 31, 2025. Approved states will receive a base funding amount, with additional resources allocated according to the size and needs of their rural populations.

With the application period only weeks away, it is crucial for states and health systems to collaborate effectively. This collective effort will help ensure that rural communities are not overlooked as they seek to improve access to quality healthcare services. The Rural Health Transformation Fund represents a significant opportunity to address long-standing disparities in healthcare access and quality in these regions.

Stakeholders are encouraged to prepare their applications diligently to take full advantage of the funding and support available. As the health landscape continues to evolve, the successful implementation of these plans could lead to transformative changes for rural healthcare systems across the country.
