Allentown has introduced its first public health vending machine, offering residents free access to crucial health supplies. Located at The Lehigh Conference of Churches, situated at 457 W. Allen St., this initiative aims to enhance community health and provide essential resources around the clock.
The vending machine dispenses a variety of items, including naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal medication, wound care kits, reproductive and sexual health kits, first-aid supplies, hygiene products, and educational materials. Future plans include stocking the machine with menstrual products, such as pads and tampons, and reserving space for other hygiene essentials based on local needs.
Enhancing Community Health Access
This initiative is part of the city’s broader efforts led by the Substance Use Task Force to improve access to health care and reduce barriers for residents. By placing these blue and pink vending machines in trusted, easily accessible locations, Allentown aims to address pressing public health issues. Instructions will be available in both English and Spanish, ensuring inclusivity for diverse community members.
Funding for these vending machines has been sourced from opioid settlement funds, reflecting a commitment to combating the ongoing public health crisis related to substance use. The Allentown Health Bureau is also actively engaging the community by accepting donations of menstrual products. Residents can purchase disposable sanitary supplies through Amazon and have them shipped directly to the Health Bureau or drop them off in person at 245 N. 6th Street.
Future Expansion Plans
The city plans to install additional vending machines in various locations throughout Allentown, further expanding access to vital health supplies. This initiative represents a proactive approach to ensuring that essential health resources are readily available to those who need them most.
For questions or more information about the program, residents can contact the Allentown Health Bureau at 610-437-7760. The introduction of these vending machines marks a significant step forward in promoting community health and safety in Allentown.
