Wilmer Melton officially assumed the role of city manager in Kannapolis on January 12, 2026, succeeding longtime manager Mike Legg. Melton, a familiar figure in the city, brings over two decades of experience to his new position, having served as assistant city manager for the past six years and as public works director for 19 years prior.
Having grown up in Kannapolis, Melton attended South Rowan High School before earning a bachelor’s degree in construction management from North Carolina A&T State University. His qualifications are further bolstered by a municipal administration certification from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Melton’s extensive background also includes participation in significant national initiatives, such as serving on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Drinking Water Advisory Council and representing North Carolina at the National Rural Water Association.
The transition from assistant city manager to city manager has been smooth, aided by Legg’s role as a consultant until April 2026. Melton expressed gratitude for the support he has received from his colleagues, stating, “I’ve worked alongside most of the folks that are here at the city for 25 years. Everybody has been overwhelmingly supportive of the transition, helping me in the role.”
Major Contributions and Vision for the Future
Melton has played a pivotal role in several key projects, including the revitalization of downtown Kannapolis, the development of the Irish Buffalo Creek Greenway, and improvements to Old Beatty Ford Road. He regards the downtown development, which includes a minor league baseball stadium, as one of his most significant achievements. “What really excites me is when my son, when he was with his high school friends and even now with his college friends, they’ll come to Kannapolis and come downtown,” Melton noted. “Seeing him and his friends and the other kids be able to enjoy what we’ve been able to create downtown, it’s rewarding and exciting to me.”
As he looks forward to 2026, Melton aims to collaborate closely with the newly elected Kannapolis City Council to align with their goals and assess the city’s infrastructural needs. He is also keen on evaluating how the city manages public events and optimizes the use of parks and recreational facilities. “Thinking about the needs of the City Council, making sure we are providing the best level of service to our citizens and customers. Understanding economic growth and where that needs to be in our community, balancing that with our citizenry,” he explained.
A Personal Touch and Future Aspirations
On a personal level, Melton is focusing on his health this year, expressing a desire to return to the fitness levels he enjoyed in high school. “I want to get back to those high school days like I used to have, but I got to realize those years have passed perhaps,” he reflected. “There’s things that we can do individually to really make ourselves as healthy as possible to be able to be here for our families as well as serve the community.”
When asked about a potential movie about his life, Melton humorously suggested casting Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, reflecting his admiration for Marvel films. In terms of dream vacations, he expressed a preference for the Maldives, drawn to tropical locations for their beauty and recreational opportunities. If stranded on a deserted island with only one book, Melton would choose the Bible, stating the importance of faith in challenging times. His guiding motto, “Failure is not an option,” encapsulates his determination.
As Wilmer Melton embarks on this new chapter as city manager, he remains committed to not only the growth of Kannapolis but also to learning from fellow city management professionals in the region. His proactive approach and deep-rooted connection to the community position him as a key figure to watch as the city navigates its future.
