The Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) has appointed Alana Carithers as its new executive director. Carithers, a violinist with the WSO since 2005, previously served as principal second violin for the past decade. Her selection was announced on November 20, 2023, following a three-month tenure as interim executive director after the departure of Carolyn Keurajian.
John Krapfl, chair of the WSO’s board of trustees, emphasized the importance of finding a leader who embodies the organization’s core values of integrity, community, and collaboration. “When you add her deep knowledge, extensive experience, passion for music, and her exceptional leadership and managerial skills, it becomes unmistakably clear that she is the right person for this role,” Krapfl stated in a news release. He expressed enthusiasm about Carithers’ potential to strengthen the symphony’s presence in the community.
Carithers brings over 20 years of experience in leadership roles within nonprofit and arts organizations across the United States. She holds a Master of Music degree in violin performance from Northwestern University. In her new role, she aims to further the mission of the WSO, which she describes as having been a significant part of her musical journey. “It is a true privilege to continue serving a mission and a community that I care about so deeply,” Carithers said in a statement.
Experience and Vision for the Future
Her background includes recognition as an accomplished violinist, educator, and arts leader. Throughout her career, Carithers has participated in a variety of orchestral, chamber music, and solo performances, as well as international festivals. She has held numerous leadership positions, including artistic director, treasurer, development officer, programmer, personnel manager, music librarian, guest artist director, and operations manager.
Carithers succeeds Keurajian, who left WSO after 12 years at the helm to become the executive director of the Charlottesville Symphony Society. Under Keurajian’s leadership, the WSO welcomed conductor Michael Butterman in 2022, marking a significant milestone for the organization.
Krapfl’s confidence in Carithers reflects the board’s commitment to nurturing the symphony’s role as a cultural cornerstone in the community. As she transitions into her executive role, Carithers aims to leverage her extensive experience to secure the future of the WSO while enhancing its impact and outreach.
The WSO looks forward to a new chapter under Carithers’ guidance, with expectations that her leadership will foster a vibrant community connection through music and the arts.
