The Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade returns this Sunday, October 29, 2023, in the East Village, celebrating its 35th anniversary with exciting new features. For the first time, the parade will be led by a group of Grand Marshals — five adoptable dogs from local rescue organizations such as PupStarz, Social Tees, and the ASPCA.
Fern Watt, founder of the nonprofit New York Dog Parade, expressed enthusiasm for this year’s event, stating, “It’s going to be very cute. And we’ve got some other surprises in store to kick off the parade.” The festivities will take place along Avenue B, stretching from 11th to Seventh streets, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
With approximately 1,200 dog owners registered to participate, the parade promises a vibrant display of costumed canines. A panel of three judges will select 20 finalists for the costume contest. The ultimate winner will receive a grand prize that includes a supply of dog food from sponsor Stella & Chewy’s and a gift card to Tompkins Square Bagels. Watt noted, “We didn’t want the dog to be the only one getting a tasty treat, because we know humans also put in a lot of work into these beautiful costumes.”
While registration for the costume competition has closed, the parade remains free for spectators. Organizers encourage the public to come and support the participants along the parade route. For those dogs simply attending to watch, there will also be treats available.
The event not only highlights the creativity of pet owners but also promotes animal adoption from local shelters. As this beloved tradition continues, the Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade stands as a testament to community spirit and the bond between humans and their furry companions.
