The Glasshouse has officially partnered with GemArts, enhancing its roster of Artistic Partners as it celebrates its 20th anniversary season. This collaboration marks a significant milestone, as GemArts becomes the fifth partner alongside notable artists such as Corinne Bailey Rae, Maria Włoszczowska, The Unthanks, and John Wilson’s Sinfonia of London.
As part of this partnership, GemArts is set to present six performances annually, including events during the renowned Masala Festival. The new season kicks off on September 27, 2023, with the much-anticipated Orchestral Qawwali Project. This large-scale co-production will showcase music by Rushil Ranjan and feature the celebrated vocals of Abi Sampa, known as the UK’s first female Qawwal.
Upcoming Events and Collaborations
The autumn season will also see the continuation of the Riverside Ragas concerts. Events include Tar Rang – 100 Colours, 100 Strings on September 19, Ghazal Lounge on October 10, and performances by Sanskrati Wahane and Gurdain Rayatt on November 28. In addition, other Artistic Partners will play a prominent role in the upcoming months. Notably, Bailey Rae will lead a music and dance residency at a primary school in Gateshead, and The Unthanks will debut their quarterly Friday Night Club on September 26.
On the same day as the opening performance, Maria Włoszczowska will join the Royal Northern Sinfonia for a concert featuring works by Strauss and Mahler. Meanwhile, John Wilson’s Sinfonia of London will return for concerts scheduled for October 17 and December 18.
The addition of five Artistic Partners is a significant achievement for The Glasshouse. Wendy Smith, Creative Director at The Glasshouse, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “Having five Artistic Partners at once is a huge step for us. It’s a clear sign of the artist-led, creatively ambitious era we’re in.”
This partnership with GemArts not only highlights The Glasshouse’s commitment to diversity in programming but also reinforces its role as a leading venue for cultural events. As the organization continues to celebrate its two-decade legacy, it looks forward to fostering new artistic collaborations that will enrich the community and enhance the cultural landscape.
