Renowned British actor Stephen Fry is set to narrate a new documentary titled This is Soho, which explores the vibrant culture and future of the iconic London district of Soho. The film promises a blend of vérité storytelling and exclusive access to the lives of those who inhabit this famous area, showcasing its unique establishments and diverse residents.
The documentary arrives at a critical juncture for Soho, as rising rents and the closure of beloved institutions challenge its reputation as the bohemian heart of London. According to the creative team, This is Soho aims to provide an in-depth look at the district by featuring interviews with drag queens, pub landlords, and local legends, each contributing to the fabric of Soho’s community.
Directed by Ahmed Peerbux, known for his work on Grenfell: Uncovered, the documentary is fully financed by media entrepreneur Rob Pickles. The production is backed by Dare Pictures and Bad Tattoo, with Sphere Abacus managing worldwide sales.
A Glimpse into Soho’s Cultural Landscape
The film is set to be showcased at MIPCOM 2025, with plans for a theatrical release and participation in various film festivals later this year. Derren Lawford, the head of Dare Pictures, emphasized that this documentary is “not a film about the Soho you think you know.” He praised Peerbux’s direction and Fry’s distinctive narration, asserting that they aim to capture the essence of a community that has welcomed people from all walks of life.
Peerbux added, “Soho has always punched above its postcode — this square mile has significantly shaped the world’s cultural imagination.” He expressed the intention to create an authentic and layered portrait of this iconic area, acknowledging its glamorous history while also presenting its current realities.
The documentary reflects a broader theme of urban transformation, as Soho faces pressures from commercialisation and gentrification. Its team highlights the need to celebrate and preserve the unique character of the district, which has long served as a cultural melting pot.
As the film progresses through its production stages, This is Soho is poised to not only entertain but also provoke thought about the future of one of London’s most storied neighborhoods. The documentary aims to resonate with audiences both locally and globally, offering insights into a community that continues to evolve amidst changing times.
