Ryan Seacrest has implemented a new rule on the set of *Celebrity Wheel of Fortune* following an incident involving contestant Derek Hough. During the September 29, 2023 episode, Hough, known for his energetic personality, jumped on the iconic 2,400-pound wheel, prompting Seacrest to intervene to prevent potential damage.
In an interview with *USA Today*, Seacrest explained the circumstances surrounding Hough’s actions. Initially, Hough, who was competing alongside fellow *Dancing With the Stars* judge Bruno Tonioli, mounted the podium, which is acceptable. However, during a commercial break, he jumped onto the wheel and encouraged Tonioli to spin it, reminiscent of a cake ornament. Seacrest stated, “We did say, ‘Please don’t do that. That would break it, and there’s only one of those wheels. If that breaks, we have a real problem.’”
Seacrest described his guests as “very physical,” which often adds an element of excitement to the show. He acknowledged his longstanding relationship with Hough, having previously dated the dancer’s sister, Julianne Hough, from 2010 to 2013. “Knowing someone, or being friends, is definitely helpful. You can kind of tease them more than somebody you don’t know,” Seacrest remarked.
As Seacrest prepares to take over as the host of the original *Wheel of Fortune* from Pat Sajak in September 2024, he has received support from the show’s legacy. Maggie Sajak, Pat Sajak’s daughter, praised Seacrest’s dedication, stating, “You can really tell by how prepared he is and how he treats the contestants and how he treats the whole experience.”
Earlier in October, Seacrest witnessed a historic moment on the show when contestant Christina Derevjanik won an impressive $1,035,155 on the September 30 episode. As confetti fell, Derevjanik, 35, celebrated with Seacrest and co-host Vanna White. Seacrest expressed his excitement, stating, “I’m in tears. You’re a millionaire! Do you know you have more than $1 million?” Derevjanik humorously noted her intention to retire from her marketing job if she won.
Her victory marked a significant achievement, as she became the fourth contestant in the show’s history to surpass the million-dollar milestone. This record-breaking win surpassed the previous high of $1,017,490 set by Sarah Manchester in 2014. The earlier winners of over a million dollars include Autumn Erhard, who claimed $1,030,340 in 2013, and Michelle Lowenstein, who won $1,026,080 in 2008.
Seacrest celebrated Derevjanik’s accomplishment via Instagram, expressing that “ecstatic doesn’t even cover it” and calling it the “biggest win ever.” As the host navigates these exciting moments, his commitment to preserving the integrity of the game and his rapport with contestants will likely shape the future of *Celebrity Wheel of Fortune*.
