Riz Ahmed recently addressed the misconceptions surrounding his upcoming series Bait, clarifying that it is not a James Bond show, despite receiving support from prominent Bond producer Barbara Broccoli. The series, which follows the life of struggling actor Shah Latif over a chaotic four days, is set to be distributed by Amazon and MGM Studios.
During a panel discussion at the Deadline Studio event at the Sundance Film Festival, Ahmed expressed his excitement about the project. He highlighted the show’s exploration of the stark contrast between public perception and private reality, a theme he has contemplated for over a decade. Ahmed stated, “I started making notes in my little notepad 10 years ago now, about that crazy distance between our public and our private selves.”
In his remarks, Ahmed elaborated on how societal expectations can create a facade. He illustrated this point by describing a scenario where an actor, despite being financially struggling, feels pressured to give a substantial tip to maintain an image of success. “On the outside, it’s like, ‘Wow, you’re killing it man. You’re doing great!’ And the waiter comes up, it’s time to tip. ‘Oh, they think I’m really successful right now, I gotta send a big tip.’ You’re broke,” he explained.
The concept for Bait emerged from discussions between Ahmed and co-showrunner Ben Karlin about their personal experiences and humorous anecdotes. While the conversation touched on the aspirational nature of James Bond, Ahmed emphasized that the series is focused on a more relatable narrative. “That’s what the show is really about,” he remarked, noting that the Bond reference served as a symbol rather than a thematic foundation.
Ahmed also mentioned the positive response from Broccoli, who understood the intent behind the series and appreciated the script. He noted that she “gave her blessing” and expressed enthusiasm about the project, underscoring its authenticity and unique perspective.
With its engaging premise and strong creative team, Bait promises to deliver a fresh take on the struggles of aspiring actors, exploring the often-hidden realities behind the glitz and glamour of the entertainment industry. Viewers can expect a thought-provoking narrative that reflects real-life contradictions, set against the backdrop of a vibrant and complex world.
As the series gears up for release, anticipation continues to build among audiences eager to see how Ahmed’s vision comes to life.
