A family-owned shoe company from Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania, received national recognition when it was featured on the popular game show “Jeopardy!” on March 4, 2024. The Kepner Scott Shoe Company, which specializes in children’s footwear, was highlighted during the show’s Double Jeopardy round, where host Ken Jennings presented a clue about the business.
The clue read, “A company with a lot of sole, Kepner Scott in Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania is the oldest surviving maker of these for kids in America.” One contestant correctly answered, “What are shoes?” generating excitement for the company and its owners, the Zimmerman family.
Located on N. Liberty Street in Orwigsburg, the company has been crafting shoes since its establishment in 1888. Audrey Zimmerman, the current co-owner, recalls the moment when a writer from “Jeopardy!” first contacted her about the potential feature. “It was really exciting,” she said. After the confirmation call, Audrey and her family eagerly awaited their moment of fame.
The company has a rich history, having been purchased by Audrey’s great-grandfather, Milo Zimmerman, in 1962. Milo transformed the industry by improving the comfort and design of children’s shoes, moving away from the stiff and uncomfortable styles prevalent at the time. His innovative approach set a new standard in the market, and he is remembered as a pioneer in the field.
Audrey and her sister, Addie Zimmerman, are proud to be part of the fourth generation of shoemakers in their family. They carry on the legacy of their late grandfather, H. Clair Zimmerman, their father, Steve Zimmerman, and their aunt, Sue Murphy. The team at Kepner Scott Shoe Company, which includes about 15 employees, produces around 30,000 pairs of shoes annually, catering to children from infants to youth size 3.
The company’s commitment to local manufacturing sets it apart in an industry where many competitors have shifted production overseas. In addition to traditional styles, Audrey recently launched a new brand, Zimmerman Shoes, focusing on orthopedic footwear.
The recognition from “Jeopardy!” has had a positive impact on the business. Following the episode, the company noticed a significant increase in traffic to its website and an uptick in sales. “We could see it spike,” Audrey stated, reflecting on the boost in exposure.
The episode resonated with both locals and fans of the show, many of whom shared their excitement on social media. Audrey noted that the community was thrilled to see Orwigsburg represented alongside well-known brands like Avon and Kroger. “Orwigsburg is such a small borough, so it was nice to see it on there, and to see us too,” she said.
The family’s experience on “Jeopardy!” has not only highlighted their business but also brought the tight-knit community of Orwigsburg into the national spotlight. For more information about the company and its products, visit zimmermanshoes.com.
