Netflix’s ‘Building the Band’: A Final Tribute to Liam Payne

Netflix’s eagerly anticipated talent competition Building the Band is set to premiere on July 9, promising an emotional journey for viewers. This series, centered on forming the next big music group, holds particular significance as it marks the last project of One Direction alum Liam Payne, who tragically passed away at the age of 31. Fans are expected to tune in not only to witness the birth of new musical talent but also to celebrate Payne’s enduring legacy.

Payne, who rose to fame on the UK’s The X Factor in 2010, is one of the judges on the show. His journey from a solo artist to a member of the globally successful One Direction is well-documented, and Building the Band seeks to replicate that magic. The question on everyone’s mind is whether this series can create a band that rivals One Direction’s success. However, the show’s unique format also promises a fresh take on the genre, making it a must-watch for fans and music enthusiasts alike.

The Unique Format of ‘Building the Band’

Netflix, known for its innovative reality shows like Love Is Blind, brings a novel twist to Building the Band. Contestants will initially perform in individual booths, relying solely on their talent and potential musical chemistry to decide who they want to form a band with. This approach emphasizes raw talent over appearances, setting the stage for genuine musical connections.

Once the bands are formed, the drama intensifies as they meet face-to-face. They must navigate personal dynamics, leadership roles, and the pressure of delivering stellar performances for the judges. Netflix has structured the series to release episodes over three weeks, building anticipation and engagement among viewers.

July 9: Episodes 1 through 4
July 16: Episodes 5 through 7
July 23: Episodes 8 through 10

Meet the Judges and Host

The judging panel of Building the Band boasts impressive credentials. AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys serves as the host, bringing his experience and mentorship to the budding artists. Payne is reunited with Nicole Scherzinger, a former member of the Pussycat Dolls and a Tony Award winner, who also played a pivotal role in his early career on The X Factor. Rounding out the panel is Kelly Rowland, a Destiny’s Child alum and former judge on The Voice UK. Together, they provide invaluable guidance to the contestants.

Remembering Liam Payne

Payne’s untimely death in October 2024 left a profound impact on his colleagues and fans. Nicole Scherzinger shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, expressing her gratitude for their shared passion for music and the meaningful conversations they had. AJ McLean, in an interview with TV Insider, described Payne as an “absolute sweetheart” and a “light that lit up every room he walked into.” He emphasized Payne’s talents beyond One Direction, highlighting his skills as a solo artist, songwriter, and producer.

Cat Lawson, the executive behind Building the Band, echoed these sentiments in a statement to Deadline, describing Payne as a “glorious person” and dedicating the show to his memory. Payne’s family has also expressed their support for the series, with his sister Nicola Payne sharing her pride and emotional connection to the show in a recent Instagram post.

The Circumstances of Payne’s Death

Liam Payne died on October 16, 2024, in Buenos Aires after a tragic fall from a hotel balcony. Reports indicated that he suffered severe injuries and was likely under the influence of substances at the time. While initial charges were brought against several individuals, including hotel staff and a friend, only two employees remain in custody, accused of selling drugs that may have contributed to the incident.

As Building the Band premieres, it serves as both a celebration of Payne’s life and a testament to his enduring influence in the music world. His family and colleagues hope the show will allow fans to remember him at his best, showcasing his passion and talent for music.

With its innovative format and emotional backdrop, Building the Band promises to be an unforgettable series, offering both a tribute to Liam Payne and a platform for discovering the next great music sensation.
