In a troubling revelation, the South Korean girl group KATSEYE has disclosed that they have received multiple death threats since their debut. This alarming news comes just as they have been nominated for the prestigious Grammy Awards as Best New Artist. In an interview with BBC News, the members expressed their concerns over the threats, which reportedly also targeted their families.
Member Lara shared her feelings regarding the situation, stating, “I try to tell myself it doesn’t matter, but if 1,000 people are sending you death threats, it’s jarring. Even if it’s not going to happen, it’s heavy.” The group did not divulge the specific nature of the threats, but they emphasized the emotional toll these messages have taken on them.
Addressing Online Harassment and Sexism
Alongside the death threats, KATSEYE revealed that they have faced a barrage of sexist comments online. “People see us as women to rank. They’ll grade us based on how attractive we are, our singing and dancing skills, and then add it all up to give us a percentage,” Lara explained. This objectification highlights the persistent issues of gender-based discrimination in the entertainment industry.
Despite these challenges, the group remains committed to promoting diversity and self-acceptance. Fellow member Manon stated, “We exist for girls who are proud of their backgrounds. We want them to feel proud, regardless of their appearance or background.” This mission underscores their desire to inspire young women to embrace their identities.
Recent Achievements and Future Aspirations
KATSEYE has made significant strides in their career, recently entering global charts with their second EP, Beautiful Chaos, released in May 2023. The group’s rapid rise has been met with both acclaim and scrutiny, particularly in light of their Grammy nomination.
As they navigate the complexities of fame, KATSEYE continues to be a symbol of resilience in the face of adversity. Their experiences shed light on the darker side of the entertainment industry, but their commitment to diversity and empowerment remains unwavering. As they prepare for the upcoming Grammy Awards, the group hopes to focus on their music and message, rather than the negativity that surrounds them.
