Kamala Harris Quotes Kendrick Lamar in New Memoir’s Epigraph

Kamala Harris has chosen lyrics from renowned rapper Kendrick Lamar to introduce her upcoming memoir, 107 Days, set to be released on September 23, 2024. The former Vice President cites a line from Lamar’s hit “DNA.” from his acclaimed album DAMN., emphasizing themes of loyalty and identity with the phrase, “I got loyalty, got royalty inside my DNA.” This choice highlights her admiration for Lamar and infuses her narrative with contemporary cultural references.

In addition to Lamar’s lyrics, Harris includes a thought-provoking quote from Italian software expert Alberto Brandolini: “The amount of energy necessary to refute bullsh*t is an order of magnitude bigger than to produce it.” This combination of voices reflects Harris’s intent to engage readers in a dialogue about truth and integrity in politics.

The memoir, which she describes as a personal account of her political journey, was announced by Harris on her social media platforms in July 2024. In a video shared on Instagram, she expressed that writing 107 Days felt like experiencing her campaign in reverse, allowing her to reflect on pivotal moments and lessons learned.

Harris elaborated on the memoir’s content, stating, “While my new book focuses on the campaign trail and election, I also write about the state of our country and how we move forward.” She stresses the importance of understanding that threats to democracy did not begin with the 2024 election and calls for a collective effort to change the current trajectory.

The former Democratic presidential candidate has not shied away from expressing her appreciation for Lamar’s music. At a political rally in Atlanta, she made headlines by walking on stage to “Not Like Us,” a controversial move that received mixed reviews. This was not the first time she referenced hip-hop culture during her political engagements; at the 2024 BET Awards, she invoked a line from a Drake diss track in a promotional ad featuring actress Taraji P. Henson.

As the release date approaches, Harris appears poised to share more than just her campaign experiences. She aims to inspire readers to take action and envision a future worth fighting for. Her passionate message underscores her belief that the power remains with the people, urging a strategic and bold response to the challenges facing democracy today.

With 107 Days, Harris invites readers into her world, offering a candid exploration of her personal and political evolution during a historic campaign. As anticipation builds for her memoir, the inclusion of Kendrick Lamar’s lyrics serves as a cultural touchstone, bridging the gap between music and political discourse.
