The festive spirit will shine brightly on December 9, 2023, as the Johnson County JAM presents “An Old-Fashioned Appalachian Christmas” at the First Christian Life Center in Mountain City. The event kicks off at 19:00 and highlights local youth musicians, featuring an evening filled with traditional mountain music and community festivities.
Attendees can look forward to a variety of activities, including an old-time cake walk, a dessert auction, and live performances from talented young musicians in the Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) program, alongside the regionally acclaimed band Appalachian Trail. Admission is set at $10 for adults, while students can enter for free.
Supporting Youth and Tradition
The dessert auction presents a unique opportunity for guests to bid on homemade cakes and treats, perfect for holiday gatherings. The cake walk will also allow participants a chance to engage with the traditions of the season while enjoying performances that showcase the skills and dedication of Johnson County’s young musicians.
The Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) program plays a vital role in introducing children to the rich tapestry of local and regional old-time music. Through small group instruction on instruments such as fiddle, banjo, guitar, and mandolin, JAM aims to provide children access to their cultural heritage while fostering confidence and teamwork.
Currently, JAM programs serve thousands of youth across multiple states, preserving musical traditions that have shaped Appalachian identity for generations. Local students and instructors look forward to the Christmas event as a highlight of the year, offering a meaningful platform for young musicians to showcase their progress. Instructor Lois Dunn remarked, “The kids have learned a lot this fall. I’m really impressed with how far they have come.”
Community Impact and Future Opportunities
The concert also serves as an opportunity for the community to support JAM’s mission. Funds raised during the event will help provide instruments, instruction, and performance opportunities for the young musicians of Johnson County. Organizers express gratitude for the community’s support, stating, “Your support helps keep these musical traditions alive and gives our young people a place to belong and thrive.”
The event will take place at the First Christian Life Center, located at 315 West Main Street, Mountain City, from 19:00 to 21:00. All are invited to join in an evening filled with community, tradition, and holiday cheer, while encouraging the next generation of Appalachian musicians.
