Jennifer Lawrence has described her latest film, Die My Love, as a form of revenge following her unsuccessful audition for the role of Bella Swan in the Twilight series. During an interview with Variety at the film’s premiere, she humorously remarked that working alongside Robert Pattinson feels like a full-circle moment due to her past experiences with the franchise.
In Die My Love, directed by Lynne Ramsay, Lawrence portrays Grace, a woman grappling with postpartum depression, while Pattinson plays Jackson, her partner. Together, they navigate a shared psychosis, which adds layers of complexity to their relationship. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and serves as Ramsay’s follow-up to her acclaimed work, You Were Never Really Here.
For Lawrence, this project marks her return to the screen after No Hard Feelings and Causeway. Similarly, Pattinson is looking to recover from the disappointing performance of Mickey 17 earlier this spring.
Reflecting on her Twilight audition, Lawrence shared on the Rewatchables podcast that she was turned down immediately and did not receive a callback. “I didn’t even get a callback,” she recalled, suggesting that this setback ultimately opened the door for her iconic role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games franchise.
Both actors have since carved out successful careers, often choosing a mix of smaller films and blockbuster roles. Lawrence has portrayed Mystique in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, while Pattinson took on the mantle of the Caped Crusader in The Batman.
The critical reception to Die My Love has been largely positive, with the film currently holding an 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have particularly praised Lawrence’s performance, highlighting her ability to convey a wide range of emotions. In a review for ScreenRant, Graeme Guttmann awarded the film an 8 out of 10, noting that Lawrence’s “earth-shattering” performance is complemented by Pattinson’s strong presence.
Guttmann described the film’s tone as unique, stating, “Grace is the beating heart of this film, with Lawrence’s flashes of anger and violence balanced by the star’s subtle comedic timing in key scenes.” He emphasized that while the film does evoke moments of humor, it remains deeply unsettling.
As Die My Love prepares for its North American theatrical release on November 7, 2023, it remains to be seen how general audiences will respond. The film stands as a significant collaboration between Lawrence and Pattinson, whose paths nearly crossed 17 years ago in the world of Twilight. The anticipation surrounding this project suggests that their reunion has been well worth the wait.
