Jenna Fischer, renowned for her role in the television series The Office, is set to captivate audiences in the new play Ashland Avenue, which opens on October 7, 2023, at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. This production, inspired by the city itself, features Fischer alongside actor Francis Guinan, who plays her father in the story centered around a local video store.
Creative Roots in Chicago
The play’s writer and director, Lee Kirk, drew inspiration during a visit to Chicago in 2023. He realized how much he missed the city where he spent six years studying and starting his career. Kirk explained, “I had a few days in the city, and I realized how much I missed Chicago. The sense of community that I found when I lived there… In L.A., you don’t rub shoulders with your neighbors very much.” This reflection sparked the idea for a new play, one that would capture the essence of Chicago life.
Ashland Avenue is set in a fictional storefront along the titular street, where the last remaining location of Pete’s TV and Video serves as the backdrop. The character of Pete, portrayed by Guinan, is ready to pass the family business to his daughter, Sam, played by Fischer. Sam, however, has dreams of becoming an author, creating a poignant conflict in the narrative.
Personal Connections to the Story
Despite not initially casting Fischer in mind, Kirk soon recognized her suitability for the role. “Once the character started to really talk, I realized Jenna could play that role so well,” he said. Fischer, who hails from St. Louis, found relatable elements in Sam’s journey of leaving her familiar environment to pursue her dreams.
“I had to leave my family of origin and the city I’d grown up in to pursue my dreams of acting in Los Angeles,” Fischer shared. “It’s a scary thing to do. And so I can relate to her fear of leaving what she knows.”
The narrative also highlights the strong community ties surrounding Sam and her father, reflecting on the loyalty of customers who have cherished their experiences at Pete’s TV and Video. Kirk’s vision for the play invites audiences to connect with the characters, suggesting that they could be anywhere along Ashland Avenue, which runs through diverse neighborhoods in Chicago.
As the Goodman Theatre prepares for its 100th season, the play’s themes resonate deeply. Kirk believes that while every city faces challenges, Chicago possesses a unique spirit. He remarked, “I think Chicago has a soul like no other city I’ve been to.”
Fischer echoed this sentiment, expressing her excitement about showcasing the city through the lens of this production. “I love putting it in the spotlight through the lens of this play, which I think is a real love letter to the city,” she stated. “You don’t need to be from Chicago to appreciate this story, but if you are, it makes you feel seen and understood.”
Ashland Avenue will run at the Goodman Theatre through October 12, 2023. For tickets and further details, visit the theatre’s website.
