James Gunn recently addressed speculation surrounding actor Alan Ritchson as a potential candidate for the role of Batman in the DC Universe (DCU). In a candid interview, Gunn shared his admiration for Ritchson while navigating the ongoing fan discussions about the casting possibilities.
During a conversation with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn stated, “I am a big Alan Ritchson fan, both as an actor and as a guy… let’s just wait to see what happens.” This comment has fueled further interest in Ritchson’s connection to the iconic superhero role. In a follow-up interview with Collider, Gunn reiterated, “I haven’t thought of casting yet,” suggesting that decisions regarding the role are still in their infancy.
Gunn’s response, while non-committal, indicated a degree of openness. When directly asked about the possibility of Ritchson portraying Batman, Gunn paused before saying, “Let’s see where the script comes in. It’s not the furthest along thing. We have things that are much further along than that.” This cautious approach leaves the door open for speculation while emphasizing that the creative process is still ongoing.
Timing and Future Projects
As for Batman’s first appearance in the DCU, Gunn remained tight-lipped about whether The Brave and the Bold will mark the character’s debut. He mentioned that it would “probably not” release in the same year as The Batman: Part II, scheduled for October 1, 2027. The animated series Creature Commandos briefly showcased Batman in silhouette, but as of now, there is no live-action casting announcement.
In terms of ongoing projects, Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin have recently submitted the script for The Batman 2. Gunn expressed positive sentiments about the direction of this project, stating, “I like it. For sure, we’re headed in the right direction. There are some things that we’ve still got to work out. But it’s headed in the right direction, for sure.”
Ritchson, who has experience portraying Hawk in the series Titans and currently stars in Reacher, has openly expressed his enthusiasm for the role of Batman. In an interview with WIRED, he declared, “You wouldn’t even have to pay me to be Batman… ‘Gotham is mine.’ Look at that. I don’t even have to practice.” His eagerness adds another layer to the fan speculation surrounding his potential casting.
As discussions continue about the future of Batman within the DCU, fans are left eagerly awaiting further developments. Gunn’s insights, while not definitive, highlight the dynamic nature of casting decisions in the evolving landscape of superhero films.
