The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of “Today” anchor Savannah Guthrie, is now being investigated as a potential crime, according to the Sheriff of Pima County, Arizona. Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed that authorities uncovered concerning evidence at Nancy Guthrie’s residence, leading them to classify the situation as a crime scene.
During a press conference held on January 31, 2024, Sheriff Nanos stated, “We saw some things at the home that were concerning to us. We believe now, after we process that crime scene, that we do in fact have a crime scene, that we do in fact have a crime.” He appealed to the public for assistance in locating Nancy, emphasizing her limited mobility and asserting that she “did not just walk out of there.”
Nancy Guthrie, aged 68, has been designated as a “missing vulnerable adult” by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department due to her age. She was last seen at her home near East Skyline Drive and North Campbell Avenue in the Catalina Foothills area of Arizona. Authorities have not disclosed the specific clothing she was wearing at the time of her disappearance, but they describe her as approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighing around 150 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.
Savannah Guthrie was absent from her duties on “Today” on the following Monday but expressed her gratitude for the support her family has received through a statement read by co-hosts during the broadcast. She stated, “On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom. We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s office at 520-351-4900.”
Sheriff Nanos also noted that Nancy Guthrie showed “no signs of cognitive issues” and was “very alert” and of “very sound mind.” He described the condition of her home as “very concerning,” although he refrained from providing further details that could compromise the investigation.
The case has garnered significant media attention, particularly due to Savannah Guthrie’s public profile. She has previously shared insights into her close relationship with her mother on “Today,” even featuring Nancy during a Mother’s Day segment in 2023. Savannah reflected on the emotional support her mother provided during challenging times, stating, “When I was in my 30s, I really wished to be married and to be a mom, and things just did not happen that fast for me. And my mom’s confidence that I would be a mom… meant so much to me.”
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with relevant information about Nancy Guthrie’s whereabouts to step forward. The community’s involvement could play a crucial role in ensuring her safe return.
