The Greater Baton Rouge State Fair returns this year, offering an exciting culinary experience from October 23 to November 2, 2023. Food vendors will present over 100 menu items, showcasing everything from traditional fair favorites to distinctive Cajun specialties. With 24 vendors participating, the fair reflects local flavors, with seven vendors from Baton Rouge and four based in Louisiana.
Cliff Barton, the fair’s director, has dedicated over 53 years to the event since joining in 1973. He emphasizes the community aspect of the fair, stating, “When you come out and try all this great food and come to the fair, you’re supporting the local community, because the money goes right back into the community itself.” All proceeds from the fair are donated to the state fair foundation, which supports scholarships and grants for local citizens and organizations.
Featured Louisiana Specialties
Among the most anticipated offerings is the authentic cuisine from local catering company Jambalaya by Shake, which will operate two locations at the fair. Their menu includes jambalaya, gumbo, crawfish ébouffe, and red beans and rice. One of Barton’s favorites, meat pies, will also be available. The company specializes in creative bites, featuring options like pepperjack boudin balls, shrimp au gratin balls, and crawfish balls, all rolled into delicious morsels.
Barbecue enthusiasts will find a treat from Smoke Bayou, a local restaurant known for its smoked turkey legs, which can be served plain or topped with shrimp fettuccine or mac and cheese. Their menu also features brisket cheese fries and fried turkey legs. Another vendor, the Rib Shack, will offer barbecue pulled pork sandwiches, fried ribs, and loaded shack fries, topped with pulled pork, cheese, barbecue sauce, and jalapeños.
