Howard “Moe” Oliver Saunders, Jr., aged 90, passed away peacefully at his home on September 15, 2025. His passing marks the end of a life filled with service, family, and entrepreneurship. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara, as well as his father, Howard O. Saunders, mother, Capitola Aydelotte Saunders, and daughter, Deborah (married to Steve Fesko).
Born and raised in the Larchmont area of Norfolk, Virginia, Saunders received his education at Maury High School before attending Randolph Macon College. His early years were followed by a period of service in the United States Army during the Korean War, an experience that shaped his character and commitment to community.
In collaboration with his wife, Barbara, Saunders founded Saunders Business Systems, Inc., a venture that became a cornerstone of their family legacy. This successful business not only provided for their family but also established a strong presence in the local community.
Saunders was actively involved in various organizations, including Churchland Baptist Church, where he was a dedicated member. His contributions extended to the Portsmouth Host Lions Club, where he worked to support local initiatives. Additionally, he served on the Board of the Taylor Bend YMCA, reflecting his commitment to promoting health and wellness in his community.
Funeral services for Howard “Moe” Oliver Saunders will be held at Loving Funeral Home on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 11:00 AM. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during a visitation at the funeral home on Friday, September 19, from 18:00 to 19:30.
He is survived by two sons, Howard Kent (married to Pamela) and Robert (married to Valerie), along with six grandchildren: Christina (partnered with Chris), Michael (partnered with Taylor), Matthew, Andrew, Jessica, and Hannah. He also leaves behind two great-grandsons, Bryce and Ryan, who will carry forward his legacy.
