The family of Jon McGrew has announced his passing on August 27, 2023, at the age of 77. He is remembered fondly by his wife, Bridget McGrew, their son Ian McGrew and daughter-in-law Anna McGrew, as well as his sister, Lucinda Dyjak. Born in Pittsburgh in 1946, Jon led a life marked by significant achievements in both his personal and professional endeavors.
Jon graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School and pursued his passion for technology by studying electrical engineering at Penn State University and the IBM Systems Research Institute. His commitment to service was evident during his time in the U.S. Army, where he spent over three years working in the Encryptions Division at Fort Monmouth as an instructor.
Following his military service, Jon began his career at IBM in Endicott, New York. As an APL programmer, he made a notable impact, becoming a member of IBM’s Quarter Century Club and receiving the prestigious Ken Iverson Award from the Association for Computing Machinery in 2001. His expertise in APL took him around the globe, where he lectured and formed lasting friendships within the international computing community.
Jon’s career brought him to Essex Junction, Vermont, where weekends were often spent with Ian and Bridget enjoying the seasonal activities that the state had to offer. Following his tenure at IBM, he transitioned to Morgan Stanley in New York City. Jon experienced the tragic events of September 11, 2001, firsthand, and later authored a book detailing his experiences that day.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Jon was deeply engaged in his local community. He played an active role at the Hurley Reformed Church, contributing to events like Stone House Day. For many years, he delighted children by portraying Santa Claus at the Headless Horseman, with Bridget by his side as Mrs. Claus, spreading joy during the holiday season.
Jon’s passion for trolleys and trains was nurtured from childhood visits to the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum. He served on the Board of Trustees for the Kingston Trolley Museum for several decades, sharing his enthusiasm for this unique mode of transportation.
A devoted family man, Jon cherished attending Ian’s and Anna’s sporting events and was grateful for the friendships he cultivated worldwide. He was known for sending elaborate Christmas cards filled with stories, photos, and jokes that brought laughter to those around him.
