Dream Theater’s Dark New Album “Parasomnia” Thrills Fans

Members of the progressive rock band Dream Theater are experiencing a resurgence in popularity with their latest album, “Parasomnia,” released in February 2023. The album has received enthusiastic responses from fans, reinforcing the band’s confidence in their work. Frontman James LaBrie expressed satisfaction with audience reactions, stating, “We’re really pleased with the reception we’ve had. A song like ‘Midnight Messiah’ goes over like gangbusters.” He added that the sight of mosh pits during their performances has been exhilarating, highlighting a renewed energy in their shows.

“Parasomnia” debuted at No. 1 on three Billboard rock charts, marking a significant achievement for the band after a four-year hiatus since their last album. This release also marks the return of original drummer Mike Portnoy, who rejoined the band following his departure in 2013. The album explores themes of dark sleep disorders, which include night terrors and sleepwalking, a concept that John Petrucci, the band’s guitarist and producer, chose for its intriguing and eerie implications. He stated, “I love the sound of that word. I love the tie-in to dreams and Dream Theater, and I loved that the subject matter could be so creepy and dark.”

Companion Book and Upcoming Show

In conjunction with the album, Dream Theater has released “Parasomnia — The Graphic Album,” featuring visual interpretations of the eight tracks. This thematic approach elevates the listener’s experience, as Petrucci noted, “It makes it more epic, more classic, more special. And it’s so much fun.”

Fans can catch Dream Theater live on September 21, 2023, at the Fox Theatre in Detroit, Michigan, where they will showcase their new material. The concert is set for 20:00 local time, and tickets are available through the venue’s website.

This weekend also features a variety of other music events across the region. Notable performances include the Michigan Rattlers and JR JR at the DIY Street Fair in Ferndale, as well as a concert by Falling In Reverse at Pine Knob Music Theatre. The diverse lineup promises a vibrant atmosphere for music lovers in the area.

As Dream Theater continues its momentum with “Parasomnia,” their return to the stage reflects not only the band’s enduring legacy but also their ability to engage a new generation of fans with compelling music and innovative concepts.
