The director of an animated film inspired by Thai culture has disclosed why Sony Pictures Animation halted the project, which was two years in development. Mat Braly shared the news via Instagram, revealing that the studio deemed the film “not commercial enough to produce.”
Braly expressed his disappointment, stating, “At the very start of 2025, I received the unfortunate news that the movie I had been working on for 2+ years at a major animation studio would not be moving forward.” He acknowledged the difficult decisions studios must make, adding that he has “nothing but respect for the studio, which continues to put out amazing films.”
Project Highlights and Personal Significance
The film, which had not been officially titled, was first announced in 2023. It was set to follow a boy who journeys through the realm of Thai spirits in a bid to heal himself before undergoing a significant medical operation. This narrative was profoundly personal for Braly, who has battled a chronic illness since childhood. He remarked, “It was a deeply personal story for me as I was diagnosed with an incurable chronic illness at a very young age that brought permanent changes to my lifestyle.”
Braly, renowned for his work on the popular series Steven Universe and the 2021 Netflix film The Mitchells vs. the Machines, had collaborated with fellow animator Rebecca Sugar to craft the script. Both creators remain hopeful that another studio may consider taking on the project in the future.
Looking Ahead
Despite the setback, Braly is optimistic about his future endeavors. He concluded his post by stating, “Hoping to bounce back hard this year, though, and will be announcing an exciting new thing tomorrow. Please look forward to it.”
As fans await further news, this cancellation serves as a reminder of the challenges faced in the animated film industry, where commercial viability often dictates project outcomes. For those interested in family-friendly animation, exploring works beyond the typical offerings from major studios may reveal hidden gems worth watching.
