A new collection of concept art and behind-the-scenes images has emerged, shedding light on the making of Disney’s beloved animated feature, A Goofy Movie. Originally released in 1995, the film has grown into a cherished classic, celebrated for its heartfelt father-son narrative and humorous storytelling. This exclusive content is shared by the film’s original director, Kevin Lima, ahead of the upcoming A Goofy Movie: From Script to Storyreels panel at the Lightbox Expo.
The newly unveiled images include a captivating color key illustration by David Warter, portraying a touching moment between Max and Goofy as they float down a river. Additionally, concept art reveals the character Chad, who was initially intended to play a more significant role in a scrapped love triangle involving Max and Roxanne. The behind-the-scenes photos capture the fun and camaraderie experienced during the film’s production, underscoring the joy of creating this animated feature.
Challenges and Evolution in Storytelling
The journey to bring A Goofy Movie to the big screen was not without its challenges. Documented in the film Not Just a Goof, Lima emphasizes the importance of evolving characters from the earlier television series, Goof Troop, into a format that allowed for deeper storytelling. “For me, it was really about how do we continue the story and how do we tell it in this different format?” Lima stated.
He highlighted the need to justify the film’s existence by allowing characters to “grow”, particularly focusing on Max’s transition from middle school to high school. This shift facilitated the exploration of themes such as identity and independence, resonating with many viewers. Lima noted the significance of tackling the challenges that come with growing up, ultimately providing a richer narrative experience.
Celebrating 30 Years of A Goofy Movie
To honor the film’s 30th anniversary, Lima will join writers Jymn Magon and Brian Pimental, along with storyboard artists Steve Moore and Chris Urie, for a special panel discussion at the Lightbox Expo in Pasadena, California, on October 26, 2025. The event promises to be a celebration not only of the film’s legacy but also of the art and creativity that brought it to life.
Additionally, attendees can look forward to various activities, including a sing-along screening and a Q&A session for Netflix’s popular series, KPop Demon Hunters. As part of the festivities, discussions will also cover the costumes and concept art of the stage adaptation of Wicked.
For those eager to revisit this animated classic, A Goofy Movie is currently streaming on Disney+, allowing a new generation to experience its charm and emotional depth.
