Richard L. “Rich” Townsley, a respected member of his community, passed away at the age of 90 on November 8, 2025, at his home in Oley, Pennsylvania. Surrounded by loved ones, Townsley leaves a legacy of love and cherished memories, particularly with his devoted wife, Mary Townsley, with whom he shared an enduring marriage of 63 years.
Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Jesse M. Townsley and Caroline S. Townsley. A graduate of Wyomissing High School, Townsley furthered his education at Polytech, eventually finding success as a machine and pipe designer. His professional life was complemented by his service as a proud veteran of the U.S. Army.
Faith and Community Involvement
Townsley was a man of deep faith, actively involved with Friedens Lutheran Church in Oley for over 50 years. His commitment to the church was evident in his participation in various community activities and initiatives. Beyond his spiritual endeavors, he had a passion for woodworking, fishing, and cycling, participating in over 50 rides to raise funds for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Alongside his hobbies, Townsley was known for his competitive spirit, particularly as a player of cribbage and other card games, engaging friends and family in countless enjoyable matches.
Legacy and Memorial Service Details
Richard Townsley is remembered fondly by his children: Theresa Apgar (Gary), Jeffery Townsley (Paula), Deborah Bender (Jon), and Steven Townsley (Manoka). His legacy continues through his 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Jesse Townsley.
A memorial service to honor Townsley’s life will take place on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Friedens Lutheran Church, located at 1076 Memorial Highway, Oley, PA 19547. Burial will follow at Forest Hills Memorial Park. Family and friends are invited to gather starting at 9:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Townsley’s honor to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Miller-Keystone Blood Center.
