JoAnn Slocum, a beloved member of the Niskayuna community, passed away on January 4, 2026, following a brief illness. She was 76 years old and leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that touched many lives.
Born in Schenectady, New York, JoAnn was predeceased by her parents, Albert and Mary DePalma Popolizio. She is survived by her husband, David Slocum, her son, Christopher Slocum, and her cherished grandchildren, Cameron, Jack, and Gabriella “GG” Slocum, all from Connecticut. JoAnn’s family also includes her sister, Rosemary Popolizio Stewart, and her husband, Clifford Stewart, along with niece Michele Stewart Mannino and her husband, Rosario Mannino, both from Schenectady.
A Life of Love and Adventure
JoAnn and David first met while working at Alpert’s Furniture Store, where David was the sales manager and JoAnn held the position of credit manager. Their chance meeting blossomed into a beautiful partnership that spanned more than 50 years of marriage. JoAnn was known for her passion for reading and her dedication to her career at Craig Elementary School in the Niskayuna School District, where she spent many years before enjoying her retirement.
In her leisure time, JoAnn found joy in various activities. Whether it was spending weekends on the boat at the Schenectady Yacht Club, traveling in her RV—particularly to Mystic with her grandchildren—or exploring the Finger Lakes, she cherished every moment. An innate caregiver, she never failed to celebrate the milestones of others, making it a point to recognize birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays.
JoAnn faced life’s challenges with remarkable strength and resilience. Her courageous spirit served as an inspiration to family and friends, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Memorial Service and Legacy
Family and friends will have the opportunity to pay their respects during calling hours on January 15, 2026, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, located at 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie, NY 12205. A memorial service will follow at 5 p.m.. The family has requested a private burial at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery at a later date.
