Families in Elizabethton will gather for a vibrant celebration of reading on March 7, 2024, as the annual event “Seuss on the Loose” returns to the downtown area. Running from noon to 15:00, this engaging festival will spotlight the beloved works of children’s author Dr. Seuss and encourage literacy among community members.
The event is organized by the Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Department, Main Street Elizabethton, and the Elizabethton-Carter County Public Library. Activities will unfold throughout downtown Elizabethton, including the scenic Covered Bridge Park. Participants can start the festivities at the Elizabethton-Carter County Public Library, where they will receive a “Sneetch Sheet” and a map to guide them to various participating locations.
Families are invited to explore local businesses and community organizations, which will host guest readers, crafts, activities, and Seuss-themed refreshments. Notable participating venues include August Muse, Elizabethton Alliance Church, First Christian Church, Red Legacy Recovery, Riverside Taphouse, The Curious Moon Apothecary, and The Wicked Whit Metaphysical.
As participants visit each location and collect stickers on their Sneetch Sheets, they can later head to Covered Bridge Park. Here, the Elizabethton Parks and Recreation Department will showcase decorations inspired by Dr. Seuss’s stories, along with appearances from iconic characters such as the Cat in the Hat and the Grinch.
In addition to the themed decorations, the park will offer a variety of activities provided by community partners, including free inflatable attractions and food trucks. Community organizations participating in the park’s activities include the Children’s Advocacy Center, ECS Family Resource Center, Elizabethton River Riders, Girl Scouts of Southern Appalachians, Northeast Community Credit Union, and UT Extension Carter County.
To participate in prize drawings, families must submit their completed Sneetch Sheets to the red mailbox located in the gazebo by 14:45. Organizers encourage families to come for the enchanting stories and stay for an afternoon filled with activities designed to promote literacy and foster community engagement.
This lively event not only celebrates the joy of reading but also strengthens community ties, making it a much-anticipated occasion for residents of Elizabethton.
