Filmmaker Ben Zand is set to launch a compelling monthly YouTube series titled Human, which will spotlight “one extraordinary person or collective” in each episode. The series aims to delve into critical social issues by exploring diverse topics such as gang-afflicted neighborhoods in Chicago, exclusive jail access in Colorado, the Israel–Gaza conflict, remote communities in Central Africa, and white-only towns in South Africa.
Episodes of Human will premiere monthly on YouTube, starting in September 2023. Zandland, Zand’s independent production company, has fully financed the series, reflecting its commitment to bypass traditional industry gatekeepers. Zandland aims to deliver documentaries that resonate with audiences and address pressing global issues directly.
“This series offers raw, unfiltered access to communities and conversations that are often overlooked,” Zand remarked, emphasizing the importance of humanizing stories in today’s increasingly divided world. He stated that Human represents a significant milestone in Zandland’s journey, aiming to provide insights that go beyond sensationalism.
Zand’s previous works include the BAFTA-nominated Kingpin Cribs and The Cult of Conspiracy: QAnon, indicating his dedication to storytelling that challenges perceptions. He expressed that Human is a series viewers would not typically see on television, highlighting its unique approach to documentary filmmaking.
Zand is currently participating in the opening debate at the Edinburgh TV Festival, which commenced on August 22, 2023. This festival serves as a platform for discussions on the future of television and media, providing an ideal backdrop for the launch of his innovative series.
As Zand prepares for the release of Human, audiences can anticipate thought-provoking narratives that aim to foster understanding and empathy across cultural divides. The series promises to serve not only as entertainment but also as a catalyst for conversation about critical societal issues.
