Residents of Baton Rouge are preparing for a crucial vote on November 15 regarding three propositions related to the “Thrive” plan. While many support these initiatives, concerns have surfaced about the potential impact on the local public library system and other essential services.
Melanie Hanley, a local resident, has voiced her support for the propositions while expressing dissatisfaction with city officials who, she claims, may be exploiting the goodwill of the community. In her view, the vote is more complex than it appears, particularly after attending a meeting with the Patrons of the Public Library.
The East Baton Rouge Parish library system is widely regarded as one of the top amenities in the area. Initially, library leadership proposed a renewal millage lower than the rate they have enjoyed for years. However, Hanley points out that approximately $52 million in dedicated funds, which have been carefully accumulated for “pay as you go” projects, is at risk of being redirected to other parish needs. This situation raises concerns about the library’s funding stability, as a no vote could mean no funding for the library system beyond the end of the year.
Earlier this year, the district attorney requested financial support but was rejected by voters. Hanley argues that it is typically easier to pass a renewal than to introduce a new tax, suggesting that those responsible for addressing “other parish needs” are manipulating the election process in their favor.
According to Hanley, essential services such as the library system, mosquito abatement, and the Council on Aging are suffering while city services, including police salaries, should be funded separately. She emphasizes the need for residents to consider the broader implications of their vote and to ensure that critical community services are not overlooked.
As the voting date approaches, it remains essential for Baton Rouge residents to weigh the potential benefits of the Thrive plan against the impact on vital local services, including the public library. The outcome of this election will undoubtedly shape the future of the community and its resources.
