Bari Weiss to Lead New Debate Show at CBS News Following Paramount Acquisition

Bari Weiss, co-founder of The Free Press, has been named editor-in-chief of CBS News and will oversee a new debate show inspired by her media outlet’s approach to contentious issues. This development follows Paramount‘s recent acquisition of The Free Press, as reported by The Wall Street Journal on October 6, 2025.

In a statement, Weiss expressed her commitment to “news that reflects reality” and emphasized journalism that aims to foster understanding rather than division. This philosophy aligns with David Ellison, CEO of Paramount, who articulated a vision for CBS News to be recognized as a trusted source for balanced and fact-based reporting.

Commitment to Core Journalistic Values

Weiss communicated her principles in a letter to CBS News employees, assuring them of her dedication to the foundational journalistic values that have guided the profession. She asserted the importance of holding both American political parties to equal scrutiny, a stance she believes is essential for credible journalism.

Ellison reiterated his desire for CBS News to be viewed as a fair platform. He stated, “Bari will report directly to me, leading the work of The Free Press and collaborating with our CBS News team.” This collaboration aims to reshape CBS News into a destination for audiences seeking impartial news coverage.

Despite the changes, The Free Press will maintain its independence and continue producing content for its existing subscriber base. This dual approach signals a strategic effort to blend the strengths of both organizations while preserving their unique identities.

Mixed Reactions to Weiss’ Appointment

Following the announcement, reactions emerged from various quarters, particularly among left-leaning journalists and public figures who criticized Weiss for her pro-Israel stance. Notably, Cenk Uygur, a prominent voice from The Young Turks, expressed concern that Weiss’ appointment would undermine CBS News’ credibility, alleging that her perceived biases influenced her hiring.

While Weiss, CBS News, and Paramount have not publicly addressed these criticisms, the company’s focus on fair and balanced reporting suggests an intention to navigate these challenges carefully.

As this new chapter for CBS News unfolds, the media landscape will be watching closely to see how Weiss’ leadership and the integration of The Free Press will impact the network’s approach to journalism.
