Madison Prep’s senior guard Auri Ray delivered a standout performance, leading her team to a 44-38 victory over Buckeye in the Division II select semifinal held on March 15, 2024, at the University Center in Hammond. Ray’s remarkable play included scoring 21 points and making six steals, significantly influencing the outcome of the game. The Chargers’ victory secures their place in the state championship against University High, scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Ray’s impact was evident right from the start, as she scored 14 of the team’s 16 first-half points despite Madison Prep struggling offensively. The Chargers began the game shooting 0-for-8 from the field until Ray connected with a crucial left-wing three-pointer. By the end of the first quarter, Madison Prep led 7-4, with Ray contributing all seven points.
The second quarter saw Buckeye junior Sadie St. Pe’ narrow the gap with a three-pointer, bringing the score to a one-point difference. However, Ray quickly responded with two fast-break layups following her steals, helping her team to an 8-0 run and a 16-9 lead at halftime. Ray’s shooting was impressive, as she finished the first half at 4-of-6 from the field while the rest of her teammates struggled at 1-of-20.
As the game progressed, Buckeye attempted to close the deficit. St. Pe’ hit another three-pointer early in the third, and senior guard Natalie Graves scored a layup to bring the score to 22-19. Ray continued to be a vital player, responding with her own layup. By the end of the third quarter, the Chargers led 26-19.
In the fourth quarter, Madison Prep maintained their lead, with junior guard Gabrielle Dotson making a significant three-pointer to stretch the advantage to ten points. With time running out, Buckeye’s Libby Cross managed to score two late layups, cutting the deficit to six points. However, Ray’s defensive prowess shone through when she blocked a potential layup from Cross, regaining possession for her team.
Ray sealed the game from the free-throw line, capping off a performance that reflected both individual talent and teamwork. After two consecutive years of finishing as runners-up, Ray expressed a renewed sense of determination within her team. “We have young people, but these young people have heart,” she remarked. “They’re determined to win, and they always hustle. It’s never a dull moment.”
Madison Prep’s coach, Dwayne Hayes, echoed this sentiment, expressing optimism about their upcoming championship match. “We’re happy to make a third trip,” he stated. “This time, we don’t just want to be there. It’s time for us to finish.” The Chargers will look to achieve their goal against University High in what promises to be an exciting championship showdown.
