Fans of the acclaimed television series Broad City have been eagerly anticipating news regarding a potential revival. However, in a recent interview with Us Weekly, co-creator and star Abbi Jacobson confirmed that there are currently no discussions taking place about bringing the show back. Jacobson stated, “We have not talked about doing a revival. I think we just love the show as it is. I don’t know if we want to mess with it.”
The sitcom, which aired on Comedy Central from 2014 to 2019, is based on a web series that originated in 2009. It draws inspiration from the real-life friendship between Jacobson and her co-star, Ilana Glazer, as they navigated life in New York City. Jacobson expressed concern about the trend of reviving popular shows, saying, “There’s so many revivals. People want to mess with it, but they don’t always land.”
While Jacobson remains hesitant about reviving Broad City, she is open to collaborating with Glazer on new projects. Following the premiere of her new Netflix series, Long Story Short, on August 22, 2023, Jacobson noted the potential for future joint efforts. The series features a variety of guest appearances and tells the story of a middle-class Jewish family through the experiences of three siblings.
Jacobson described her character, Shira, as someone who shares some similarities with her own life, stating, “I’m queer and I’m married to a woman. Then there is such a difference. This family is so specific and is actually really not my version of a Jewish upbringing, but I still could find so much commonality.” The show reflects the experiences of those who grew up in the 1990s and includes themes that resonate with audiences from various backgrounds.
She expressed enthusiasm for working with Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the creator of BoJack Horseman, on this new venture. Jacobson highlighted the unique challenges of voice acting, noting the importance of conveying emotion through voice alone. “When I’m doing a live-action thing, you can see everything. So a pause, you’re seeing my facial expressions or my body language,” she explained.
The actress has also enjoyed branching out into animation, participating in various voiceover roles in series such as The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy and Bob’s Burgers. She revealed that she is involved in an animated drama titled Tangles, which is currently in production.
“Long Story Short” is available for streaming on Netflix and has been praised for its balance of humor and emotional depth. Jacobson emphasized the grounded nature of the series, stating, “It goes there. It’s really grounded, even though it’s really, really funny.”
As fans continue to cherish the original Broad City, Jacobson’s candid comments underscore a desire to preserve the show’s legacy while exploring new creative avenues.
