A classroom assignment has transformed into a remarkable achievement for junior Andersson Gervacio of Wilson Early College High School. Gervacio recently published his debut novel, Asani, which is now available on Amazon. This milestone marks a significant moment in his educational journey, showcasing the power of creativity in learning.
The inspiration for Asani originated during Gervacio’s sophomore year in a writing assignment for Delena Flakes’s English II class. Students were tasked with crafting a short story. What began as a simple project evolved into a deep exploration of themes such as self-discovery, endurance, and heroism. Gervacio’s enthusiasm for his narrative led him to expand and refine it well beyond the classroom deadline.
“I never expected that something I wrote for class would turn into a real book,” Gervacio stated. “My teacher’s encouragement and the support of my classmates inspired me to keep writing. I hope my story shows other students that their ideas are worth pursuing.”
Celebrated Achievements and Community Support
Described as a vivid and emotional tale, Asani captivates readers with its detailed imagery and heartfelt storytelling. Gervacio’s accomplishment has garnered admiration from teachers and administrators within Port Arthur Independent School District (ISD).
“Seeing where this young man came from and the struggles he went through, he stands as an example to all students that hard work pays off,” said LaSonya Baptiste, Principal of Wilson Early College High School. “You just have to keep moving forward and not get distracted by temporary setbacks.”
Gervacio’s achievement is a testament to the power of perseverance and creativity in education. The Wilson Early College community is celebrating his success as an inspiration for other students, encouraging them to pursue their passions and dreams.
A Multifaceted Student Leader
In addition to his literary pursuits, Gervacio maintains an impressive schedule at Wilson Early College. He not only earns college credits through Lamar State College Port Arthur but also actively participates in various extracurricular activities. He serves as Student Body President, Vice President of the Chess Club, and is a drum major in the school band.
Gervacio is also involved in the University Interscholastic League (UIL), the Kingsmen Club, the Bible Club, and Youth in Government. His diverse interests and commitments exemplify a well-rounded student who is making the most of his educational experience.
The release of Asani reflects Gervacio’s dedication to his craft and the encouragement he received from his school community. With this novel, he not only shares his story but also motivates his peers to explore their creativity and ambitions. The Wilson Early College community stands behind him, celebrating this significant milestone in his young career as a writer.
