The Willmar City Council has approved a new initiative called the Willmar Government Academy, designed to provide residents with an in-depth understanding of city operations. The program aims to enhance community engagement and transparency by allowing participants to interact directly with city leadership and staff.
During the council meeting, Kyle Box, the City Operations Director, presented the program, highlighting its potential benefits. “This is a fun program that we want to present tonight that I think will be very beneficial, not only for the community but also for our city staff,” Box stated. He acknowledged the contributions of administrative assistant Allie Paulsen, who was instrumental in developing the seven-week curriculum.
The academy will offer residents insights into various city departments and the decision-making processes behind local governance. Participants will learn about the services provided by the city and opportunities for civic involvement. Box emphasized that one of the main goals of the program is to foster community dialogue and encourage individuals to engage more actively in local government.
“The goals of the program are to strengthen community connections through transparency and engagement,” Box explained. He noted that the initiative aims to create a clearer understanding of public services among residents, which may inspire them to consider roles on boards and commissions or even pursue elected office.
The Willmar Government Academy will commence on March 31, 2024, and run every Tuesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. until May 12. A recognition ceremony is scheduled for the May 18 council meeting. Participants must be at least 18 years old, reside in Willmar, and arrange their own transportation. The program will be limited to 15 participants in its inaugural year, each of whom will be introduced to various city departments throughout the duration of the course.
City Councilor Justin Ask expressed his enthusiasm for the program, inquiring if it would be offered again in the future if successful. Box confirmed the intention to make it an annual event. Additionally, both Ask and Councilor Tom Gilbertson raised the possibility of including high school students or allowing a parent to participate with their civic-minded child.
Box acknowledged the challenges of including minors, particularly regarding safety and liability issues related to site tours, such as the wastewater treatment plant. However, he indicated that expanding the program to younger participants might be feasible in the future.
The Willmar Government Academy represents a proactive step by the city to engage its residents more deeply in local governance, fostering a stronger community connection and encouraging informed participation in civic life.
