William Bryant Chapman, a dedicated soldier and beloved family member, passed away peacefully at his home in Newport News, Virginia, on October 15, 2025. He was 92 years old at the time of his death, leaving behind a legacy of service and love that touched many lives.
Born on March 8, 1933, in Ayden, North Carolina, William was raised in a community that valued hard work and dedication. He pursued his education at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, a decision that laid the foundation for his future endeavors. In 1953, he enlisted in the US Army, where he served with distinction until his retirement in 1984, ultimately achieving the rank of Sergeant Major.
During his military service, William met his lifelong partner, Alice Chapman (née Thompson). Their love story blossomed during his time in service, and they shared a deep bond that lasted throughout their lives. Together, they nurtured a family that included four children: daughters Teresa Chapman-Jones (married to Samuel Jones), Monica Oldham (married to Charles Oldham), and Marcia Chapman (married to Kenneth Knott), and son William Jr. (married to Meshell Warren).
William’s family was his pride and joy. He is survived by a brother, Roosevelt Chapman, along with five granddaughters, one grandson, a great-granddaughter, a great-grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews. His commitment to his family was unwavering, and he embraced his roles as husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather with deep affection.
