The University of Hawaii has announced the opening of a new resource center aimed at supporting veterans and military-affiliated students. The Veteran Student Support Resource Center (VSSRC) will serve both current and prospective students at UH Hilo and Hawaii Community College. A blessing and open house for the center will be held on Tuesday morning, as part of the university’s commitment to enhancing resources for this community.
Located in room E232 of the UH Hilo Student Service Center, the VSSRC is designed to be a welcoming space for veterans and their families. The center will facilitate networking, connection, and access to various support services, both on campus and within the surrounding community. According to a statement from Bonnie Irwin, Chancellor of UH Hilo, “Since the establishment of the GI Bill over 80 years ago, veterans have been supported in their post-military careers by universities. UH Hilo helps veterans retool for other professions and build upon the skills they developed in serving our country.”
Support Services and Community Engagement
The VSSRC will assist veterans and military-affiliated students in navigating educational benefits through the Office of the Registrar. Lei Kapono, Interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, noted that the center will collaborate with the independent student organization Hawaii Island Veterans Club. Together, they will develop a calendar of community events, social gatherings, and professional development opportunities aimed at nurturing fellowship and a sense of belonging through peer support.
The center operates under the oversight of the Division of Student Affairs, specifically the Director of Disability and Access Services. Kapono emphasized that the Division has reestablished designated space for the center and is coordinating support staff from within its ranks. The Hawaii Island Veterans Club has also volunteered to staff the center and engage with students.
“Navigating the VA requirements can be complex,” Irwin stated. “By partnering with veterans’ resources in the community, we help our veteran students and prospective students through the process. We are honored to be able to serve these students who have served our country.”
The establishment of the VSSRC marks a significant step toward enhancing the educational experience for veterans at the University of Hawaii, fostering not only academic success but also a supportive community for those who have dedicated their lives to serving their nation.
