President Donald Trump has reignited a long-standing feud with comedian Rosie O’Donnell by suggesting he is considering the revocation of her U.S. citizenship. This remark was made via his Truth Social platform on Saturday, where Trump stated, “Because of the fact that Rosie O’Donnell is not in the best interests of our Great Country, I am giving serious consideration to taking away her Citizenship.” He labeled O’Donnell as “a Threat to Humanity” and suggested she should reside in Ireland, where she moved shortly before his inauguration in January 2017.
The ongoing clash between Trump and O’Donnell dates back to at least 2006, when O’Donnell, then a co-host of “The View,” criticized Trump, calling him a “snake-oil salesman.” Over the years, Trump has disparaged O’Donnell with various insults, including calling her “a real loser” and “a pig.”
Trump’s recent comments have drawn scrutiny from legal experts. Steve Vladeck, a CNN Supreme Court analyst and professor at Georgetown Law, described the president’s threat of “coercive expatriation” as “patently unconstitutional.” He emphasized that denaturalizing a U.S. citizen is a complex process that Congress has limited to specific circumstances, and the Supreme Court has established significant constitutional protections regarding citizenship.
O’Donnell’s criticisms of Trump resurfaced in the public eye following her TikTok video last weekend, where she condemned the administration’s response to the Texas floods. She accused Trump of dismantling critical federal early warning systems, which she claimed hindered the government’s ability to respond effectively to the crisis.
In a statement made to CNN in April, O’Donnell explained her relocation to Ireland, attributing it to her concerns over Trump’s reelection. “I knew after reading Project 2025 that if Trump got in, it was time for me and my nonbinary child to leave the country,” she remarked, adding, “I have no regrets. Not a day has gone by that I thought it was the wrong decision. I was welcomed with open arms.”
Responding to Trump’s threats on Instagram, O’Donnell expressed defiance, saying, “you want to revoke my citizenship? go ahead and try, king joffrey with a tangerine spray tan. I’m not yours to silence. I never was.”
As the feud continues, it highlights the ongoing tensions between the former president and his critics, particularly those from the entertainment industry. O’Donnell’s outspoken stance against Trump has made her a prominent figure in the discourse surrounding his presidency, and the latest developments are likely to keep both her and Trump in the public eye.
