In an effort to connect students with potential career paths in the U.S. Navy, a new initiative is employing virtual reality technology to provide immersive experiences. The mobile display, developed in partnership with marketing services, has been traveling across the United States, allowing students to explore various Navy roles through interactive simulations.
The virtual reality setup aims to engage young people where they feel most comfortable—within the realm of gaming. According to Ken Woodmansee of the VML Advertising and Marketing Agency, “By developing this mobile attraction that uses cutting-edge technology and gamifies many of the tasks associated with the Navy, we are meeting young people where they like to be.”
Reaching Thousands of Students
Over the past year, the initiative has visited more than 200 locations, reaching thousands of students. On March 4, 2024, the Navy’s strike team made a stop at Tulare Union High School in California, where students had the opportunity to engage with the virtual reality displays. Michelle Nunley, the school’s principal, highlighted the importance of this outreach: “We want to ensure students know about the opportunities available to them so that when they leave us, we have done our part in educating them about their future paths.”
The interactive experience is not only informative but also plays a crucial role in the Navy’s recruiting efforts. Local students like Ayden Carrillo, a junior at Tulare Union High School, expressed enthusiasm about the potential career paths the Navy offers. “It makes me feel really excited because it opens more doors for me, especially since I didn’t think of anything else before the Navy,” Ayden said.
Encouraging Exploration and Future Planning
The initiative is also encouraging students to consider military service as a viable option for their futures. Freshman Osie Early shared similar sentiments, urging peers to explore military opportunities: “If you don’t know what you want to do in life, try this, try the military, try the Navy, try the Army, Air Force. You don’t know what can happen.”
The strike team’s next stop is at Golden West High School on March 6, 2024. Schools interested in hosting the Navy’s mobile display can find more information on the official U.S. Navy website. This innovative approach not only offers students a glimpse into military careers but also plants the seeds for potential future enlistments, helping to shape the next generation of service members.
