On the evening of February 13, 2026, members of the Straight Fork Community Education Outreach Service Club (CEOS) convened for their monthly meeting, focusing on health education, community service, and the multifaceted world of coffee. President Imogene Wimer initiated the gathering, which featured a series of presentations aimed at fostering personal well-being and community engagement.
The meeting opened with members signing “Thinking of You” cards and completing monthly activity cards. Following the formalities, Cathy Evans led a segment titled “Reflections,” while Miral Gibson led the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes from the previous meeting were presented by secretary Fern Watson and were subsequently accepted, along with the treasurer’s report from Jane Metzgar.
Health Insights and Coffee Education
One of the highlights of the evening was a health presentation by Miral Gibson, titled “Stepping into Healthy Habits.” Gibson emphasized the importance of regular exercise and strength training in reducing the risk of chronic diseases and falls. This message resonated with members, underscoring the club’s commitment to promoting health and wellness.
Following this, Connie Cutright delivered an engaging lesson titled “Cup of Comfort: Coffee and Its Uses.” The presentation provided a comprehensive overview of coffee’s history, its various uses, and the emerging health benefits associated with this popular beverage. Participants learned that coffee was allegedly first discovered by a ninth-century Ethiopian goat herder and has since evolved into one of the world’s most traded commodities.
“Coffee is part of the everyday lives of many,” Cutright noted, highlighting its diverse applications beyond mere consumption. She reminded attendees that ongoing research continually shapes our understanding of coffee’s health benefits, making it essential to stay informed.
Literary Love and Community Initiatives
The meeting also featured a report by Debbie McCabe on the theme of reading, aptly titled “Love of Books or Love of Reading: Which Are You?” McCabe distinguished between two types of literary enthusiasts. She described bibliophiles as those who cherish the aesthetics of books, while bookworms or “bookaholics” derive joy from the stories themselves and the knowledge they gain from reading.
In line with the club’s focus on community involvement, Cutright presented statistics regarding CEOS membership and distributed order forms for club materials. She also shared that she had placed ten books in the Little Library at IGA, promoting literacy within the community. Each member participated in a light-hearted exercise, passing around a box of chocolates, fostering camaraderie.
As February is recognized as Heart Health Month, Fern Watson provided crucial information regarding the signs of a heart attack, such as chest pain, nausea, and shortness of breath. This was complemented by a report from Julia Spelsberg, a representative from Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, who introduced Donna Snyder. Snyder urged attendees to utilize advanced testing options, such as Cardiac CTA, which offers a detailed 3D view of the heart without invasive procedures.
Finally, the meeting concluded with a book review by Velva Walton, featuring “Thursdays at Eight” by Debbie Macomber. Walton shared insights about the lives of four women who form a supportive community through shared experiences. She also offered practical tips on maintaining wellness during winter, including keeping a journal and incorporating movement into daily routines.
After the reports, members engaged in a brief business meeting, discussing updates from the County Council and plans for future community activities. The evening concluded with refreshments provided by Gibson, Daisy Hunt, and other members, encouraging further conversation and the sharing of local news.
The Straight Fork CEOS continues to play a vital role in promoting health, literacy, and community spirit, fostering a supportive environment for its members and the wider community.
