Rep. Lance Clow, a prominent member of the Idaho Legislature and former chairman of the House Education Committee, announced his resignation effective November 30, 2023. Clow, a Republican from Twin Falls, made the announcement on his campaign Facebook page and confirmed his decision to step down after 19 election cycles since 1993.
In his statement, Clow expressed that he believes it is the right time to conclude his service. “I believe this is the appropriate time to conclude my service as an elected official,” he stated. Clow, who will celebrate his 78th birthday next month, cited health limitations as a significant factor in his decision. He indicated that these limitations have begun to affect his ability to serve effectively.
Clow also mentioned a desire to focus on “personal goals and family commitments.” He emphasized that he did not want to continue as a lame duck lawmaker during the upcoming legislative session. His decision comes ahead of the 2026 elections, where he had already privately resolved not to run for an eighth term in the House.
Following Clow’s resignation, it is now the responsibility of the Republican Party in District 25 to submit three nominees to fill the remainder of his term. Gov. Brad Little will then select a successor from this list.
Clow’s political career began in 2012, and he has served in various leadership roles, including chairing the House Education Committee from 2018 to 2022. After that, he was appointed chairman of the House Business Committee. He remained active on the House Education Committee from 2023 to 2025.
Clow’s departure marks a significant change within the Idaho Legislature, leaving a notable legacy in education policy and legislative leadership. His long-standing commitment to public service and education policy will be remembered as his constituents and colleagues prepare for the transition.
