Penn State Hazleton Receives $950K to Boost Dual Enrollment Program

A generous gift of $950,000 has been awarded to Penn State Hazleton to enhance its dual enrollment program, enabling academically qualified high school students from the community to take courses at the campus without any associated costs. This initiative aims to allow students to earn college credits while still in high school, providing them with invaluable early exposure to college-level academics.

The anonymous donor expressed a strong commitment to supporting students in the Hazleton Area School District. “I want to help students pursue a college degree while they are in high school through dual enrollment,” they stated in a recent news release. “Students will have access to all university resources, including tutoring, academic advising, the library, and computer facilities. I encourage students in the Hazleton Area School District to take advantage of this opportunity.”

The dual enrollment program, which has been a part of Penn State for decades, is designed to introduce high school students to college-level coursework. It will cover tuition and all related expenses, effectively removing the financial barriers for students who may not otherwise have access to such educational opportunities.

Program Launch and Course Offerings

The program is set to commence in the spring 2026 semester, offering classes in various disciplines including history, speech, mass communications, and rehabilitation and human services. As the program develops, more courses are expected to be added to the curriculum.

Professor of History Justin Nordstrom is among the faculty members who will teach one of the initial courses, History 21: American Civilization Since 1877. Students will also benefit from academic coaching focused on essential skills such as note-taking, study strategies, and exam preparation.

Interim Regional Chancellor Durell Johnson highlighted the importance of connecting with local high school students. “Programs like dual enrollment strengthen ties with the community, support regional educational needs, and expand the pipeline from area high schools to the campus and the university,” he noted. The anticipated expansion of the program in fall 2026 is expected to draw even greater student participation as they explore a wider range of subjects and potential career paths.

Selection Criteria and Community Impact

High school seniors and juniors will be selected based on their academic readiness, ensuring that participants are equipped to succeed in college-level courses. Brian Uplinger, Superintendent of the Hazleton Area School District, indicated that selection criteria will include GPA, teacher recommendations, and a demonstrated commitment to learning.

Uplinger emphasized that students participating in the program will be able to integrate these college courses into their regular schedules without sacrificing core high school requirements. “The goal is to complement their high school experience, not replace it, while providing flexibility to meet graduation requirements,” he stated.

During a recent forum at Penn State Hazleton discussing the future of satellite campuses, building stronger relationships with local schools emerged as a critical point. Uplinger believes that establishing solid partnerships between local schools and Penn State Hazleton facilitates a smooth transition for students into higher education. “It also helps students see college as an attainable goal and fosters a sense of community engagement and collaboration,” he added.
