Otsego Junior High Students Explore U.S. Capitol with Rep. Latta

U.S. Representative Bob Latta guided students from Otsego Junior High School on a tour of the U.S. Capitol last week, offering them a firsthand glimpse into American governance. This educational visit took place on a date in March 2024, highlighting the importance of civic engagement among young people.

During the tour, students explored significant areas within the Capitol building, including the House and Senate chambers, as well as the Rotunda. Representative Latta emphasized the role of Congress in shaping national policies and encouraged the students to be active participants in their democracy.

As part of the visit, the students learned about the legislative process, the history of the Capitol, and the responsibilities of elected officials. Latta opened the floor for questions, fostering an interactive environment.

In a statement, Latta remarked, “It is vital for students to understand how their government operates. Engaging with them in this way helps inspire the next generation of leaders.” His commitment to education and civic engagement underscores the role of elected officials in nurturing informed citizens.

The tour is part of a broader initiative to connect students with their representatives and the workings of the federal government. These visits not only provide educational experiences but also cultivate a sense of responsibility and awareness among young people about their civic duties.

This engagement is particularly significant as it instills a sense of pride and belonging in students. By witnessing the legislative process up close, they gain valuable insights into the functions of government and the impact of policy-making on their lives.

The trip to Washington D.C. represents a unique opportunity for the Otsego students to develop a deeper understanding of their role in a democratic society. Such experiences are essential for fostering informed and active citizens in the future.
