The North Ridgeville Branch of the Lorain Public Library System recently organized a Yoga Storytime event designed to engage children through movement and mindfulness. On July 25, 2023, the program attracted a group of children eager to explore yoga while enjoying a related storytime led by Felicia Coffey, a public services professional at the library.
Coffey, who has a personal interest in yoga, aimed to introduce its benefits to children in a fun and interactive way. “I just had an interest in yoga myself, and I thought the best way to start was at the kid’s level,” she explained. Her goal was to create a storytime experience that emphasized movement while also providing an introduction to yoga practices.
The session began with a lively song, setting the tone for a series of stretches and movements that helped the children connect with their bodies. Coffey demonstrated simple breathing exercises, such as bear breathing and owl breathing, which are intended to aid in mindfulness and emotional regulation. “The breathing aspect was really important to me because that is something they’re going to take with them for the rest of their lives,” she said.
Coffey emphasized the significance of teaching children memorable techniques for breathing and yoga stretches. She employed engaging methods, like pretending to breathe through a straw or balancing like a flamingo, to make the exercises accessible and enjoyable. Each child received cards depicting different animals, each linked to a mindfulness activity, enhancing their learning experience.
“I think that will calm the minds,” Coffey noted. “Tying in those connections for them is really important to get them to remember.”
The success of a similar event held in winter prompted the library to bring back Yoga Storytime for the summer. Parents and children alike responded positively to this interactive program, which diverges from traditional library offerings. “It’s always an adventure,” Coffey remarked. “I think the kids that have come have really enjoyed it. I’m very glad that the people that come have a good time with their children.”
The positive feedback underscores the library’s commitment to innovative programming that promotes wellness and creativity among young attendees. For more information on upcoming events, visit lorainpubliclibrary.org.
