The Sierra Vista Historical Society has launched the Tom Shupert Memorial Field Trip Grant, aimed at enhancing educational opportunities for local students. This initiative allows teachers to take their classes on field trips that connect them with the rich history of Sierra Vista, Arizona. By facilitating visits to significant historical sites, the program seeks to provide immersive learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom.
Sierra Vista has a historical background dating back to 1877. Understanding this legacy is vital for the community, and the Historical Society intends to pass this knowledge to the next generation. According to Elizabeth Wrozek, president of the Sierra Vista Historical Society, the area is culturally significant due to its diverse historical influences. “This is a really interesting place, because it’s a crossroad of multiple cultures, from early indigenous people to more modern indigenous people,” she noted.
The grant encourages educational trips to locations such as the Henry at Hauser Museum and the Fry Cemetery. These sites offer students hands-on experiences that allow them to better understand their local heritage. Wrozek explained, “The goal is really to expand historic knowledge locally, especially with our children, and to be able to foster an interest in our history and how we fit into a larger national context.”
The inaugural use of the grant occurred in the fall of 2023, and additional funding is available to support several more trips during the upcoming spring season. Wrozek expressed enthusiasm about the positive impact observed from the program, saying, “It was really exciting to see the kids out there and to see them connecting with our past. We’re just so thrilled to be able to offer this to our local educators and students.”
Beyond imparting factual knowledge, Wrozek believes that the program fosters a sense of community and belonging among students. “It gives them a sense of community and belonging and a connection to the people in the past,” she remarked.
To ensure the sustainability of this valuable initiative, the Sierra Vista Historical Society plans to hold a fundraising event this spring. The aim is to raise additional funds for future grants, thereby expanding the reach of these educational experiences for more students in the area.
This new program highlights the importance of local history in education and represents a commitment to enriching the learning environment for young people in Sierra Vista. The Historical Society’s efforts reflect a broader initiative to engage students with their community’s heritage, ultimately fostering a deeper appreciation and understanding of their historical context.
