NDSCS Fire Science Students Honor 9/11 Victims in Stair Challenge

In a powerful tribute to the lives lost on September 11, 2001, students from the North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) participated in a stair challenge on Thursday morning. Clad in heavy fire gear, these Fire Science students climbed a total of 2,200 steps, symbolizing the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. This event, held at the NDSCS football stadium, honored the 343 firefighters who perished that day while showcasing the resilience and dedication of those in the firefighting community.

The 9/11 Stair Challenge served not only as a physical test but also as an emotional commemoration of the tragic events that unfolded over two decades ago. With each step, participants reflected on the bravery of first responders and the profound impact of the attacks on countless families and communities.

Organized by the college’s Fire Science program, the challenge drew participation from over 30 students, who gathered early in the morning to begin the climb. The atmosphere was somber yet filled with camaraderie as students encouraged one another throughout the rigorous ascent.

Participants carried the weight of their gear, which typically includes helmets, boots, and other firefighting equipment, adding to the challenge. This symbolic act of climbing stairs not only physically represented the firefighters’ heroic actions but also served to instill a sense of solidarity among those training to enter the field.

“It’s important for us to remember what happened that day and to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Michael Anderson, a senior in the Fire Science program. “This event is a way for us to pay our respects while also pushing ourselves physically.”

In addition to the physical challenge, the event incorporated moments of reflection. Participants gathered for a brief ceremony before the climb, where they shared stories and honored the memories of those lost. The event concluded with a moment of silence, allowing everyone to reflect on the significance of the day.

As the students completed their climb, they were met with cheers and applause from fellow classmates and faculty members, emphasizing the strong support network within the NDSCS community. This annual event is part of a broader initiative by the Fire Science program to instill values of service, dedication, and remembrance in future firefighters.

The 9/11 Stair Challenge not only commemorates a pivotal moment in history but also reinforces the commitment of aspiring firefighters to uphold the legacy of those who came before them. By participating in such events, they acknowledge the sacrifices made while preparing to serve their communities in the future.
