Mount Wachusett Community College (MWCC) has been awarded a significant grant of $150,000 from the state to enhance workforce training in high-demand fields such as Information Technology, healthcare, and education. This funding is part of a partnership involving the North Central Massachusetts Development Corporation (NCMDC) and the Spanish American Center, aimed at increasing enrollment and completion rates in these critical career paths.
The initiative will employ targeted outreach methods, industry-aligned technical skills training, and comprehensive student support services. Additionally, it will incorporate essential English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction, ensuring that multilingual learners and immigrant communities have access to the resources necessary for career advancement.
Strengthening Local Workforce Development
MWCC President James Vander Hooven emphasized the college’s commitment to meeting regional workforce needs and ensuring equitable access to education. “This initiative reflects MWCC’s continued commitment to meeting the workforce needs of our region while ensuring equitable access to education and career advancement,” he stated.
Building on the successes of the previously recognized Equitable Credentialing Initiative, this collaboration aims to strengthen access to workforce training and support services. MWCC will play an essential role in delivering training and support designed to help participants successfully complete credentials and transition into gainful employment.
The NCMDC, along with the North Central Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce, will work to connect participants with employer partners and job opportunities. The Spanish American Center will focus on culturally responsive outreach, enhancing access for those in the community who need it most.
Creating Sustainable Career Pathways
President and CEO of the NCMDC and the North Central Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce, Roy Nascimento, highlighted the importance of skilled talent in building strong regional economies. “Strong regional economies are built on access to skilled talent, and this grant reflects the North Central Massachusetts Development Corporation’s commitment to strengthening the economic foundation of our region,” he noted.
The collaboration aims not only to remove barriers to training and employment but also to increase credential attainment and bolster the regional workforce pipeline in sectors that continue to experience critical demand.
