Principal Rob Reetz of Mounds View High School has been awarded the title of 2026 Minnesota High School Principal of the Year. This recognition highlights his dedication and collaborative approach within the educational community. Reetz expressed gratitude for the honor, stating, “It’s very humbling. I feel like a lot of the success I have in this position is due in large part to partnership.”
The Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals selects a principal from each of the state’s eight regions. Reetz was chosen to represent a region that encompasses 93 schools in the east metropolitan area. The selection committee reviewed candidates in December, ultimately naming Reetz as the state’s representative, which allows him to represent over 450 lead principals at the national level.
Reetz’s extensive career spans approximately 19 years within the Mounds View Public Schools district. His previous roles include principal of Edgewood Middle School and Chippewa Middle School, as well as serving as a professional learning specialist and special education teacher. In addition, he has led professional development initiatives and has experience as a coach, according to the district’s official website.
In discussing his leadership philosophy, Reetz remarked on the significance of incorporating both student and teacher voices in decision-making processes. He emphasized, “I think I’ve really learned to galvanize people in times of crisis. And generally to listen and be curious and try to understand the real essence of a problem before we jump to solving it.”
Since receiving the award, Reetz has reflected on the influences and mentors in his life, particularly his twin brother, Russ Reetz, who serves as principal at White Bear Lake Area High School. He attributes much of his success to the collaborative efforts of his colleagues, stating that the award is a reflection of their hard work and dedication to students.
Reetz holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth, a master’s degree in special education from Augsburg College, and an education specialist degree in leadership, policy, and administration from the University of St. Thomas. His educational background, combined with his commitment to fostering a supportive school environment, showcases the qualities that have led to this significant recognition.
This award not only honors Reetz but also shines a light on the collaborative efforts of the Mounds View educational community, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in achieving excellence in education.
